*** CFP for a New "Metaheuristics and Local Search" Track at GECCO 2005 ***
June 25-29 2005
Washington, DC, USA
We are pleased to announce the introduction of a new track on "Metaheuristics and Local Search"
(MHLS) at the upcoming GECCO-2005 conference in Washington, DC, during late-June of 2005.
Motivation:
A great deal of current research in heuristics for optimization overlooks numerous common, reinforcing
features present in both evolutionary/nature-inspired algorithms and metaheuristics such as tabu search,
scatter search, and variable neighborhood search. Examples include such central themes as the interplay
between intensification versus diversification, mechanisms for escaping local optima, the intelligent
design of move/mutation/crossover operators, and the structure of the fitness landscape. By overlooking
these similarities, the net result is a counter-productive duplication of ideas, often leading to research
that is inadvertently focused on independent re-discovery of fundamental search mechanisms. Consequently,
"golden opportunities" to develop and leverage more advanced mechanisms are frequently missed. By
introducing the Metaheuristics and Local Search Track at GECCO 2005, our goal is to "close the gap" and
foster interaction between these two largely isolated research communities.
Solicited topics/track scope:
We invite submissions that explore any research topic at the intersection of evolutionary/nature-inspired
and metaheuristic search algorithms, such as the design of hybrid algorithms and cross-paradigm comparisons
of algorithm performance. We are especially interested in papers that demonstrate fundamental similarities
and/or differences between different approaches, with the goal of understanding the types of problems or
sub-problems for which particular techniques are most appropriate.
