Special issue of JoS on scheduling/planning in airline operations

Call For Papers

Special Issue of the Journal of Scheduling on "Planning and
Scheduling Problems in Airline Operations"

Guest Editors: Jonathan F. Bard and Cynthia Barnhart

===================================================================

The airline industry more than any other, has been the battleground where
theory meets practice with respect to the use of operations research and
artificial intelligence techniques for solving strategic, operational, and
tactical problems. Successes in such areas as crew scheduling, revenue
management, and maintenance base planning have changed the way the industry
does business. Underlying these applications is a wide array of novel
methodologies, clever implementations, and easy-to-use decision support
systems, all built on a growing theoretical foundation. The aim of this
special issue is to further document the work that has been improving all
aspects of airline operations. We wish to take a broad view and consider
such topics as

* Irregular operations, the ground delay program, and disruption management
* Personnel scheduling for both air and ground crews
* Airport operations including gate assignments, runway scheduling, and
  baggage handling
* Fleet assignment
* Maintenance planning and scheduling
* Passenger management
* Revenue management
* Flight schedule design
* Robust airline planning and operations

We are looking for papers that generally provide new understanding and
improved solution methodologies for problems that arise in these areas. We
are particularly interested in methodologies that integrate aspects of
mathematical programming, artificial intelligence, and stochastic processes.
Submissions that offer new insights while advancing the state-of-the-art of
existing computational procedures are also welcome. Papers of a strictly
theoretical nature, or whose main focus is on decision support, information
systems or database design, are not within the scope of this special issue
and should be directed elsewhere.
