The University of Surrey through the School of Electronic Engineering, IT & Mathematics is committed to exploit the opportunities provided by the pervasive and explosive growth in computing. The University is currently re-profiling its Department of Computing in order to instil a research ethos aimed at international excellence in computing, in particularly software engineering. The other established research area within the Department is artificial intelligence. The University seeks to make a number of appointments at various levels within the Department focussed on research. The Department benefits from large numbers of applicants for its undergraduate and postgraduate courses and has already appointed staff to cater for these opportunities. The Department has close relationships with all other areas of the School, including the 5* rated "Centres for Communication Systems Research" and "Vision, Speech and Signal Processing" and sees this approach as an important part of its future strategy. The University considers sabbatical leave arrangements, and industrial contacts/consultancies, to be very important for staff development and encourages these whenever possible.

POST 2537 Research Professor of Software Engineering

Available from October 2000

Salary Negotiable

Applications are invited for this post from within any area of software engineering. The Professor will provide research leadership in their chosen area of interest and will in due course appoint at least two new lecturers and with performance-related plans for two more lecturers in the following academic year. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to build upon the existing strengths within the 5* rated Centre for Communications Systems Research and will receive full support from all other Centres in the School.

POST: 2539 Reader/Senior Lecturer in Software Systems

Salary £32,510-£36,740 per annum subject to experience and qualifications

Applications are invited from suitable candidates to strengthen the newly formed Centre for Software Systems. This Centre’s interest is in developing robust methodologies for the analysis and design of software systems, particularly in safety-critical systems. The current focus of research is in the areas of mathematical foundations of computing, vector semantics and the innovative use of group theory. The Reader/Senior Lecturer will be a good team player, focussed on research and interested in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. POST: 2540 Three Lecturers in Artificial Intelligence

Applications are invited for lectureships in evolutionary computing, software agents and multi-media information extraction to strengthen the Department’s work in intelligent systems. The interests in evolutionary computing include genetic programming and complex adaptive systems; in software agents the interest is in autonomy, mobility and co-ordination; and in information extraction the interest is in computational semiotics. These lecturers, based in the Centre for Knowledge Management, will form a team to work on challenges offered by the Internet and the emerging ideas related to the ‘grid’. The lecturers will also have the opportunity to work with the Schools’ 5* rated Research Centres for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing, and Communications Systems Research.
